Poetry Out Loud 2022
Leonard Narumi started his teaching career as Director of Instrumental Music at Schurr High School, his alma mater, in the Montebello Unified School District. He served in that capacity from 1983 to 2007; and retired as the district’s Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator in 2017. An “Honorary Life Member” of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, Mr. Narumi is also a 2002 “Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year” who has been widely recognized by civic leaders, service groups, and professional organizations – testaments to his long-standing commitment of always trying to do what was best for students, families, and communities.
Mr. Narumi’s extensive resume includes being a freelance adjudicator, arts education consultant, serving as a conductor/educator/arranger with the North Torrance Youth Musicians Ensembles (NTYME), and having guest conducted honor bands for ABC Unified School District, Capistrano Unified School District, California State University Los Angeles, Kern County, and the SCSBOA. Mr. Narumi's wide-ranging musical experiences include having been selected to perform a piano concerto with the La Mirada Symphony when he was a freshman in high school, having served as director, instructor, and music arranger for the Koyasan Boy Scouts Troop 379 Drum & Bugle Corps, and having performed as a percussionist with various ensembles including the American Youth Symphony, Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra, Fullerton Civic Light Opera, Japanese Philharmonic of Los Angeles, Pacific Chorale, Pacific Symphony, Rio Hondo Symphony, Roger Wagner Chorale, San Fernando Valley Symphony, and Steven Traugh’s Supercussion.
